Rio Dropped From England Qualifier
Wanted to get this in early (1: 10 am) as it's going to be in the morning editions of the newspapers. Rio Ferdinand has been dropped from the team for the Austria match. On the basis of form and attitude in recent weeks, this is no bad thing.
However, it's looking likely his replacement is going to be Sol Campbell. Now - despite the fact that I'm a Spurs supporter - I have nothing against Campbell. He is, undoubtedly, a great full back and he does add a certain attacking threat. Nevertheless, he's played all of three games since returning from injury.
Can Campbell really be said to be back to his sharpest ? Clearly not. Do we have alternatives who are playing out of their skins and who deserve a chance. Yup. We have Jamie Carragher from Liverpool and Ledley King from the mighty Tottenham Hotspur. If England are looking for a bit of that extra attacking threat that Campbell offers; then Ledley King should really be the man to replace Ferdinand.
It's a shame that's not what's going to happen.
